Great Interview Questions That Reveal Who Someone Really Is

In a world full of canned answers and polished résumés, the right interview question can uncover what truly matters and reeals how someone thinks, grows, and connects.

Here are 5 of my favorite interview questions that work at any level — from early career to the C-suite:

1“𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?”
This one opens the door to character and the personal experiences that potentially shape professional values.

𝟮. “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿?”
A simple but powerful way to uncover unique strengths and how aware someone is of their impact. I also look for the messaging and positioning in this answer.

𝟯. “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝘀𝘀?”
This reveals how they perceive their boss, and gives you clues about what they value in a manager.

𝟰. “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲, 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆, 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴?”
This invites courage! And gives you insight into their real thoughts on company culture.

𝟱. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁?”
This flips the power dynamic and gives the candidate space to reveal what they think is most important.

These aren’t trick questions. They’re conversation starters that help you get beyond the resume and into the real story.
